Overview
An introduction to Portsunlight Village & Liverpool
-
One of the finest surviving industrial worker villages in the world
In 1888, on the banks of the River Mersey, William Lever bought a piece of Wirral marshland and began building his new soap factory and community for the workers called Port Sunlight. It was named after Lever Brothers' famous and innovative Sunlight Soap product.
Lever employed over 30 architects to help create his vision. What set Port Sunlight apart from similar planned communities like Bournville and Saltaire was its low density housing and radical emphasis on beauty, from varied English architecture to picturesque landscapes.
