Durham for the Cathedral

Durham Cathedral is one of the great buildings of Europe. Set grandly on a rocky promontory next to the Castle with the medieval city huddled below and the river sweeping round, the profile of the World Heritage Site is instantly recognisable.

Situated at the heart of Durham's UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Cathedral is cherished as one of Europe's great Norman cathedrals.  Built as the shrine of Saint Cuthbert over 900 years ago, it remains a site of pilgrimage with a rich cultural history, housing tombs of two great saints.  Visitors are drawn to the Cathedral as a filming location for the Harry Potter films and Marvel Avengers: Endgame, and for its magnificent Romanesque architecture which makes it an unmissable stop for any tour in Durham.

After 3 years of renovation, the impressive central tower has reopened for visitors.

Include a visit to Open Treasure, the award-winning museum experience sited in the UK's most intact medieval monastic buildings.  Marvel at the 14th century oak-beamed ceiling in the Monks' Dormitory before stepping into the octagonal Great Kitchen to see the Treasures of Saint Cuthbert, some of the most significant surviving Anglo-Saxon artefacts in the UK.
