Newcastle

Newcastle has forever been known for its fantastic nightlife, with the Geordies being well known for throwing a good party. But this old shipbuilding town has a lot more to offer now we’re in 2024. For first-timers, ticking off seeing the Tyne Bridge and Newcastle Castle (what a mouthful!) should be on the list. And if your route into the city allows it, stopping for a photo of the world-famous ‘Angel of the North’ has to be done. But once you’re in the city, there are some fantastic experiences to choose from that’ll ensure your adventure metre is fully topped up. The city has gained a reputation of being one for the ‘foodies’, with the street food scene thriving throughout Newcastle and Gateshead. The pick of the bunch is the Hawker Market by the River Brew Co. and there are plenty more fantastic street food vendors in and around the city serving up international cuisines and treats for you to dig into. One for the football fans is checking out the home of Newcastle United, St James’ Park, famous around the world for its incredible atmosphere on match day, and taking a wander through Quayside should be on the list to soak up the atmosphere and grab a drink with friends & family. Check out the full list of things to do in Newcastle here.

Norwich

We’re staying on the East Coast, just 200 miles south! Norfolk is a stunning city with an incredible mediaeval history, but it has a lot more to boast than beautiful castles and ancient ruins. The city centre is lovely to walk through, with a tranquil river running right through it, the River Wensum. The city has a lively arts and music scene, with the cultural highlight potentially being the Norwich Theatre, the largest stage in the East of England. There are also plenty of food and drink festivals hosted in the city throughout the year, including the star-studded Foodies Festival. See more Norwich food & drink festival options here. Norwich Castle itself has been going through a major revamp which is due to be completed in the summer of 2024, including a restoration project that aims to refresh some of the castle whilst ensuring it keeps its 12th century look. Whether it’s shopping for thoughtful gifts, eating tasty food or exploring the mediaeval parts of the town, Norwich has everything you need for a fabulous day out by coach.

Bristol

Bristol is an incredibly quirky city with something for all ages, perfect for a day out by coach with all the family, your friends or solo. The city is the birthplace of Banksy, the world’s most famous street artist, whose work greatly personifies the city’s atmosphere and aura. You can take a walking tour of Banksy’s artwork throughout the city, and then you can head to the Bristol Museum and Art Gallery to see Banksy’s amazing exhibition as well as many other fascinating exhibitions and artefacts from periods such as the Egyptian times. For lovers of all things engineering, the Clifton Suspension Bridge is a site to behold, with stunning views across all of Bristol and beyond, as well as being a staggering piece of architecture itself. If you have some little ones with you for the day, a trip to Aerospace Bristol is one to tick off, combining education with great fun through various interactive exhibits and pieces of history. You could finish off the day with a wander through Bristol Harbour, once a busy dock full of sailors and merchants, the harbour side is now an area packed with lovely restaurants, bars and shops.

Leeds

A city with all the hustle and bustle you’ll ever need paired with an array of fun activities for all the family, Leeds is a fantastic destination for a day out by coach. If it’s designer shopping you’re after, there are few places better to visit than Leeds, so if you’re looking for that New Year treat, head to one of the amazing shopping centres such as the Trinity or the Kirkgate Quarter for a more market feel. The ruins of Kirkstall Abbey are a site to see, one of the best preserved Cistercian monasteries in the country, founded over 800 years ago, or you can take a stroll through the grounds of Harewood House, situated north of the centre but well worth a trip to if you have the time. To finish the day, wander through the classic Victorian arcades full of boutiques and funky independent businesses, or just spend time marvelling at the beautiful layout. A walk around Hull Marina should be on your list too, its location in the heart of the city provides lots of cute shops and cafes, allowing you to take in the peaceful surroundings with all of your family and friends. For an educational fix, take a visit to one of the brilliant museums within the city, whether it be Ferens Art Gallery or the Streetlife Museum for something a bit different.
